For a period, Campbeltown was the undisputed Whisky Capital of the World, boasting over 30 distilleries operating simultaneously at its peak. Locally available peat, barley and coal, coupled with a quick steamship service to Glasgow meant this thriving industry lasted into the early 20th Century. Alas; ultimately (and perhaps inevitably) it proved unsustainable, and by 1935 the bubble had well and truly burst, with only Springbank and Glen Scotia distilleries remaining.
• Region: Campbeltown (Kintyre Peninsula)
• Known for: One of Scotland’s most traditional and hands-on distilleries, famous for doing 100% of production on-site — from malting to bottling. Produces characterful, oily, lightly peated whiskies with huge depth and complexity. Revered by enthusiasts for its authenticity, low intervention approach, and cult-status releases.
• Signature style: Oily texture, soft coastal smoke, maritime salinity, dried fruits, malt richness, earthy notes, subtle citrus, vanilla, and gentle spice. Typically a robust, old-school profile with natural funk and complexity.
• Casks used: A mix of bourbon barrels, refill hogsheads, and sherry casks (Oloroso and PX). Limited editions may incorporate port, Madeira, rum, or wine-seasoned casks. Springbank is known for long maturation and minimal cask influence masking the spirit’s character.
• Notes: Springbank is highly respected for its traditional methods, including partial triple distillation for Springbank, full double distillation for Longrow, and 2.5x distillation for Hazelburn. The distillery is family-owned and has a fiercely loyal global following. Limited supply and traditional production make their whiskies some of the most sought-after in the world, with demand often exceeding availability.
