The Macallan distillery was founded in 1824 by Alexander Reid, a barley farmer and school teacher. Now owned by the Edrington Group, The Macallan prides itself on its Six Pillars, which include its curiously small stills, very narrow ‘cut’ of new make spirit and exceptional cask management. It is the most sought after whisky for collectors, regularly setting records at auctions all round the world. A new £140 million subterranean distillery and visitor centre on the Easter Elchies estate was opened to the public in the summer of 2018 and has since won several awards for its architectural quality; with its exciting features including glass walls of vintage whiskies, a circular pod of copper pot stills, and a Boutique reflecting those in Dubai and Heathrow airports.

• Known for: Producing some of the world’s most luxurious and collectable single malts, with a reputation built on exceptional cask quality—especially sherry-seasoned oak. Known for a richly textured spirit shaped by small stills, high cut points, and an unwavering focus on wood influence.
• Signature style: Dried fruits, rich sherry sweetness, dark chocolate, orange zest, baking spices, oak richness, vanilla, and a silky, viscous mouthfeel. Modern expressions may also feature honeyed malt, fresh oak, and gentle citrus from American oak influence.
• Casks used: Renowned for its use of European and American oak sherry-seasoned casks, primarily Oloroso. Also uses American oak ex-bourbon barrels and occasional experimental casks for limited editions (e.g., PX, red wine, hybrid oak types). The majority of its flavour profile is driven by wood selection.
• Notes: Macallan is one of the most iconic names in Scotch whisky, known for pioneering ultra-premium releases and setting global benchmarks for sherry-matured single malts. The distillery’s modern facility—opened in 2018—is one of the most advanced and architecturally striking in the industry. While famous for its sherry heritage, Macallan continues to expand its range with innovative cask combinations while maintaining its hallmark richness and depth.
